Arnprior

Overview

Arnprior is a separate town at the confluence of the Madawaska and Ottawa Rivers, about 65 km west of downtown Ottawa. It grew through the 19th century as a hub of the Ottawa Valley timber trade, after businessman Daniel McLachlin built a large sawmill where the rivers meet; by the early 1900s it had two rail lines, hotels, and lumber and textile mills. The historic downtown along John Street, with its landmark clock tower, has kept much of that small-town character even as improvements to Highway 417 have turned Arnprior into a popular commuter town for Ottawa.
