Bells Corners

Overview

Bells Corners takes its name from Hugh Bell, who built a tavern here in 1834 at a crossing point on Richmond Road roughly midway between Bytown and the Richmond military settlement. The community survived the 1870 fire that swept much of the Ottawa region and stayed largely rural until Lynwood Village, its first major housing development, was built in stages from 1950 to 1966. It remains a smaller, established suburb within Ottawa's western Greenbelt, with a commercial strip of retailers and services along Robertson Road.
