Carleton Place

Overview

Carleton Place is a separate town on the Mississippi River, founded around a grist mill built at Morphy's Falls in 1820 and renamed in 1829 for a public square in Glasgow. Lumbering was the town's first major industry, followed by woolen textile mills and, from 1862, David Findlay's iron foundry, which produced stoves and furnaces for more than a century. That mill-town legacy is still visible in a walkable historic downtown along the river, paired with a slower, small-town pace than the town's size might suggest.
