Cumberland–Navan–Vars

Overview

Cumberland, Navan, and Vars are rural villages at Ottawa's eastern edge, each established in the 19th century — Cumberland in 1800, Navan in 1861, and Vars (originally called Bearbrook Station) renamed in 1886. The area remained largely agricultural until the late 20th century and today is a popular bedroom community for commuters who want rural residential living, from large lots to genuine acreages, without giving up a reasonable drive into the city. Cumberland, on the Ottawa River, has the strongest village identity of the three; Navan carries a more agricultural character; and the area's bilingual, francophone heritage remains strong, particularly around Vars.

Getting Around

This is a car-dependent rural area with limited OC Transpo service compared to urban Ottawa; Highway 174 and local county roads connect the villages to the rest of the city. Check octranspo.com for any routes currently serving the area.
