Kemptville
South
Overview
Kemptville is the largest community in the Municipality of North Grenville, sitting on Kemptville Creek about 56 km south of Ottawa along Highway 416. Settled in the early 1800s and originally known as Wolford or Hurd's Village before being renamed in 1828, it grew up around mills powered by the creek and rebuilt much of its downtown after a major fire in 1872. Today it functions as both a heritage main-street town and a commuter and service centre for the surrounding area, with independent shops downtown alongside newer retail development.
