Russell–Embrun

Overview

Russell and Embrun are the two main communities of Russell Township, southeast of Ottawa, both established along the Castor River in the 19th century. Russell (settled earlier, and known briefly as Duncanville) is primarily anglophone, while Embrun — named in 1856 after its founder's hometown in France — is predominantly francophone and grew around its Catholic parish. Both villages boomed after railway stations opened in 1898 and again after Highway 417 made commuting into Ottawa easier from the 1970s onward, and the township today mixes small-town main streets with newer residential subdivisions.
