Almonte

Almonte is a former mill town on the Mississippi River, part of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills along with Pakenham, Appleton, and Clayton since a 1998 amalgamation. Named in 1859 for Mexican general and diplomat Juan Almonte, it grew into one of Canada's leading 19th-century wool-cloth centres, once home to seven woollen mills along the riverbank; the last closed in the 1980s. Today the mills have given way to an artistic community of painters, potters, textile artists, and musicians, with a well-preserved downtown built directly onto the river.

Almonte is outside OC Transpo's service area and reached from Ottawa via Highway 44 or Highway 7; a car is generally needed. Check the Town of Mississippi Mills' website for any local transit options.
