Alta Vista–Elmvale Acres is a residential south-end community that grew after Ottawa annexed the area in 1950, with Elmvale Acres built out in the late 1950s by developer Robert Campeau. It is a quiet, family-oriented area with a large amount of parkland, several schools, and places of worship of many faiths — and it is also a major healthcare hub, home to The Ottawa Hospital's General Campus and the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). Many original post-war homes on large lots are gradually being replaced with larger, newer houses.

Several OC Transpo bus routes serve the area along Alta Vista Drive, Smyth Road, and Elmvale's shopping centre, connecting residents to the hospitals, downtown, and the wider transit network. Check octranspo.com for current routes and schedules.
