Carlingwood is a west-end neighbourhood centred on the Carlingwood Shopping Centre, which opened in 1956 as the largest shopping centre in Eastern Canada and once housed the first library in Canada located inside a mall. Enclosed and modernized in 1971, the centre has been renovated repeatedly over the decades but has kept much of its original character — carpeted hallways, indoor plants, and warm wood tones that set it apart from Ottawa's more heavily rebuilt malls. The surrounding neighbourhood is a mix of established, mid-century residential streets built up around the mall's decades of steady growth.

Carling Avenue and Woodroffe Avenue carry several OC Transpo bus routes through the neighbourhood, connecting it to downtown and the wider west end. Check octranspo.com for current routes and schedules.
