Orléans is Ottawa's largest francophone community outside Quebec, named by an early postmaster for his birthplace near Quebec City. What was a small, overwhelmingly French-speaking village grew rapidly from the 1960s onward, becoming Canada's fastest-growing community for a stretch in the 1980s; commercial growth followed along St. Joseph Boulevard and around the Place d'Orléans shopping centre, built in 1979. It remains a hub of Franco-Ontarian culture with French-language schools and services, alongside family-friendly suburban neighbourhoods and riverfront green space at Petrie Island.

Orléans is served by numerous OC Transpo bus routes and the O-Train Confederation Line's eastern extension, with St. Joseph Boulevard and Highway 174 as the main arterial connections to the rest of Ottawa. Check octranspo.com for current routes and station locations.
